Short Story

I wrote this for school. It's an original short fiction. I hope you'll like it.

It’s the same as it always was; green, full of life, almost magical. It doesn’t seem like anything’s changed, except the trees are a little bit taller, and the rope swing has disappeared. It seems untouched by time, although many years have passed since I was here. The day she left was the last day I came. This clearing in the woods behind her house used to be our special place. Dragons, elves, knights in shining armor, and all manner of magical creature lived here. Often, we would have to cross a great, rushing river during our quests. Other times, we’d ride dragons and griffins around our castles; sometimes for fun, and sometimes to fight off giants and evil sorcerers. On most days you could find us here, lost in magical fantasies. Those were the best days of my childhood; of my life. This clearing was the only place where I felt at home, where I felt strong and important.  All the memories of the fun we’d had come rushing back to me. I sink to the ground and sit, feeling helpless, as I often did when I was a child. Why did I come back here? There are so many memories, and pain with every thought. That last day I vowed never to come back, so what am I doing here? Images of her, long forgotten, pervade my mind. That’s why I came back, for her. She had left me with a job to do, and I hadn’t finished it. I didn’t know what it was, until now. I got up and made my way out of the clearing. I followed the hidden path out of the woods, it was still as fresh in my mind as it was the first day we had discovered it. Finally out of the woods, I pass the “For Sale” sign in front of her house, walk to my car, and drive home. I’ll be back soon. I owe it to her.

A few days later I come back. I’ve brought my children with me. We make our way to the clearing, just like she and I used to do. I hadn’t told them where we were going. I say, “This was our woods,” and they understand; it’s their favorite bedtime story.  I watch their eyes light up as they start to see the stories come to life, and I imagine too.  I’m soon snapped out of my reverie by her voice whispering in my head, “Do you understand?” At last, I can answer yes.

It’s a new day; I’m back at the clearing in the woods. I’ve brought some things with me: rope, a ladder, a saw, a round piece of wood 2ft in diameter, and other necessary items. I’m going to make a rope swing, just like the one we had before. Hopefully other children will be able to have as much fun with it as we had with ours. I start to work, using what little knowledge I have of craftsmanship. It’s a while before I’m finished and can step back to view my work. Seeing a swing up there again triggers memories of flying and fantasy. It reminds me of all the great adventures we had had when we were children. Now that I’m done, I head back out to my car, lingering in front of the house for a short while before leaving; the “For Sale” sign is still up. I wonder how many families have lived there since my family left, 20 years ago. I decide to pick up a flyer, and then I go home.

It’s been awhile since my last visit to the clearing. I’ve made some big decisions in that time. I’m back today; this time I won’t say goodbye. My children are with me again; they’ve discovered the rope swing that I built. I watch them as they discover the joy that this clearing can bring. I can finally see the entire picture; the reason she gave me this job. She knew; she planned on this, even before she could have possibly known. I look up at the sun shining through the trees; my children are laughing, their voices ringing with the joy that only children possess. I whisper the words “thank you” into the air, and imagine the wind carrying them up to heaven. I know she hears me, I can feel it. I linger for a moment as my children race back to our new house. My sister; my twin; the emptiness that seized me when she left, when she died, is now gone. I’ve finished the job she left me with, and her legacy will live on.

Praying for Boston

Ok, so I'm sure most of you have heard about the bombing in Boston today.  It's absolutely terrible. As of now there are 3 people confirmed dead, and over 100 injured. People have lost limbs, and have suffered major traumas. Not to mention the PTSD that quite a few people will probably develop. Terrorism. It's just unbelievable. So, if terrorism is supposed to be some sort of show of power, why doesn't the guy (or girl) who did it take credit for their act? I mean, without saying who they were working for then how are they supposed to show thqt their organization is "powerful"? Sure, they might be scared of being arrested, but hey, if you're bold enough to bomb the Boston Marathon then jail isn't too much of a concern, right? Either that or they're way to confident in their ability not to get caught. Whatever their thought process was, the result of their actions was absolutely devastating. The evil in the world is increasing, guard yourself. I'm praying for all the wounded, the families of those who were injured and killed, and the world. They need your prayers as well. Even in the darkness, there is still hope. Keep faith in God, He's the only one who can truly fix the world.

"But hold on to what you believe in the light
When the darkness has robbed you of all your sight."
- Mumford and Sons "Hold On To What You Believe"

Poetry

So, as I mentioned in the last post, I'm going to share some of my poetry with you. I've pretty much always liked coming up with little rhymes which, as I got older, developed into poetry. For a little while I lapsed in my poetry writing, I guess I just forgot that I liked it so much. I don't know why. Anyway, I've started writing again because one of my close friends likes poetry too, and inspired me to start again. Here's one of my recent poems:

A sea of light and wonder washes over me
A breeze of love and laughter
Whispers through the trees
All of these things I see
And I can’t quite believe
That this beauty belongs to me

All the stars in the sky
Twinkle brightly at night
And the moon shines upon the earth
Nothing can quite compare
To all the wondrous beauty here
Everything has enormous worth

So I quietly stand amazed
Holding a steady gaze
Admiring all that is mine
The beauty and grace
Contained in this place
Shall endure until the end of time

So yeah, haha I also had to write a sonnet for school, so I'll post it too:

I wish I could be a bird in the sky,
Flying above the dreary earth below.
With my beautiful feathered wings, I'd fly,
Up towards the gorgeous golden sun's bright glow.

I feel freedom in the empty night air.
The moon's reflection on still, dark water
Makes me imagine a girl, tall and fair
As if earth and heaven had a daughter.

I wish I were that lovely, ghostly girl
Who finds freedom waiting for her at night
She has nature to hold her as she twirls
And for her, everything is alright.

I see these visions dancing in my dreams,
And nothing is ever quite what it seems.

And that concludes my poetry post, I may share some more of my poetry another time. Until next we meet, farewell :) haha

It's Been Awhile...

 I

I got a new hat! haha I'm going to wear it to a fancy tea that I'm helping to plan! haha What do you think?
I was also experimenting with new makeup looks haha. I pretty much look the same haha. But hey, makeup's not supposed to cover up, it's supposed to accentuate your natural beauty, so I suppose this is a success haha

I don't even know hahaha, just messing around with my camera I guess haha, what do you think? Could I be a model? haha I'm just joking, I don't really care. Gosh, I must seem really conceited :p

So anyway, I went laser tagging for the first time last weekend and got to hang out with a bunch of amazing girls! haha I am not terrible at lasertag but I'm not good either, by any means. haha :p A few months ago I went to winter camp, which was awesome! The only bad part was that it was only a weekend long, so we didn't get to do too much. The worship band was great! The leader was actually an old childhood friend of mine. I doubt he recognized me haha I've changed alot in 10 years. One of the illustrations the speaker used was really funny. He showed us a video of a panda who had climbed a tree which couldn't support it. It inevitably fell out of the tree, taking a branch with it. The panda then proceeded to throw a fit, fighting and biting the branch. It was funny to watch but the point he made was great. He told us to think about our life as the tree, and our choices and things in our lives as the branches. He challenged us not to depend on things, people, or choices that won't support us. Invariably we will try to deflect the blame for our own failures onto other people or things. If we trust God to support us, we won't fall, if He's our branch, we won't fail.

Another one of his topics was about giving away your heart, and taking care of others' hearts. He said to be careful who you give your heart to, to make sure they'll take care of it, and won't be careless with it. He also said to take care of the hearts of those who've given you their heart. It's a big responsibility and not one to be taken lightly. It scares me a little, having this huge job. I feel like I'm not prepared. But really, is anyone really prepared for that? I'm not sure, but I know that if you trust God with it He'll make it turn out right.

At camp I got to hang out with some old friends, and get ignored by some old friends. :p haha well, whatever, if they don't care about me anymore that's fine. I've got awesome friends already, I don't need to stay stuck in the past. If those people don't want to come with me into my future, then I won't stand around waiting for them. haha All ranting aside, it was awesome to see and talk to people I hadn't seen in a long time (as much as 3 years). It freaks me out to see just how much we've all grown up. And now I have to think about college? Yikes :p So much growing up to do, so little time :(

And on that happy note (hmm, do I detect sarcasm?), I bid you adieu. Until next time, when I present to you an example of my poetry haha ttyl :)

Recent Events

Hey! It's been awhile :p So, I got my PSAT scores back, I did quite well haha :) I also had my birthday in November! And I got my driver's permit! haha the streets of CA better watch out :p hahaha I also went to Tennessee for Christmas! It was so fun! I hadn't been to Tennessee in three years, and never for Christmas. All of my dad's brothers and their families came: Uncle Brian, his wife Tanya, and their kids Tyler (my age) and Alex (my younger brother's age); Uncle Gary, his wife Christine (Chris), and their son Ian (four years older than me). My Uncle Mike already lives in Tennessee with his wife Christina (Chris), and is my grandma's neighbor. Their kids came down with their families: Jamie and Kelly and their son Jonah (3); Jacob and Lyndsey; Fawn and her kids Brynn (Alex and my brother's age), and Gage (5); and Jeremiah and his fiance Crystal. On Christmas Eve and a few other days we were all in one room. Needless to say, it got pretty crazy! haha :) A cool thing about our family is that almost all the males play at least one instrument. On at least one occasion, there was a jam session in my uncle's basement/band room. I got to hear/see one of them, and let me tell you, it was pretty awesome haha :) My dad was rocking out on the guitar, Jacob was on the base, Tyler was supporting on the guitar, and Uncle Gary was tearing it up on the drums! haha :) I got to drive a four wheeler and a punked out golf cart while I was there too haha :) I had an interesting experience on the four wheeler though :p I was driving it and was just about to turn around when it completely stopped. It ran out of gas! There was absolutely no cell service where I was stopped so I had to walk down to the nearest house. It had a giant truck cab (like for 18 wheelers) in front of it. I rang the doorbell and a kinda scary looking guy answered the door. He actually turned out to be pretty nice because he let me use his phone to call my uncle so that he could come get me. Everything turned out fine but it was kinda embarrassing haha :p It snowed while I was there too! Well, it was only like an inch, but it was snow! I never get snow where I live, so every little bit counts! haha :) When we came back, we had a little "Christmas" celebration with my mom's parents. Then the rest of break was pretty uneventful, that is until we went to the Mythbusters exhibit at the Tech Museum. It was so cool! They had actual props and things that they had built and tested on the show! It was so cool to get to see that! I got a t-shirt that Tory Belleci designed. It says "Warning: Science in Progress" and has a picture of a guy diving away from an explosion. It's pretty funny if you think about it, well it is to me anyway haha. So yeah, that's been what's up. haha hopefully I'll write soon :)

October

Yesterday our church had Trunk-or-Treat. It was really fun! I dressed up as a taco! Five of my friends were Taco Bell hot sauce packets! It was awesome :) I took the PSAT in October, I thought it went pretty well. I'm glad it's over though! haha :) Our church youth group has started a new ministry called Dance Outreach. I think it's going to be awesome. We have two proffesional dance instructors who attend our church and they agreed to teach a two hour session once a month to our youth group and any friends we want to bring. I can't wait until the next one! I am now an official member of the worship team at my church. My dad is the worship leader and has been trying to get me to get on the team for a while. I started singing with them because of my friend who also sings. She convinced me to sing with her and it turned out to be not as bad as I thought it would be. I won't sing without her though! haha :) I went to the Rescue Conference 2012 last month. It was amazing! Francis Chan was one of the speakers and was very inspirational. Josh Shipp was another speaker and was inspirational and hilarious! The worship was amazing! I loved it! There was one "act" that performed called The Petting Zoo Band, and they were amazing! They drummed on a pile of junk and it sounded so cool! You should look them up! haha :) A guy that I knew when I was little played a song with the worship band. It's called "The Stand" by Hillsong United (or Kristian Stanfill), but he sang it in spanish! It was awesome, and so powerful. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he's going to be the worship leader at our church's highschool winter camp this year! :) I can't wait!
